I wonder why “scent/color” is discomforting for you. I did not mean çeşni. I meant a character that is visible and percievable commonly. Its hard to explain for sure but makams were classified emotionally back then by scholars as well. Like in west major being considered happy and minor; emotional or sad. Its all generalization but some makams doesnt suit some functions today thats a reality. Great master Bekir Sıdkı Sezgin gives one or two examples on this at his lecture records. Like kürdi and nihavend being problematic in our religious music :) It does not have the serious vibe generally. Especially Kürdi is very lacking in this sense. I make myself a target for the audience, atış serbest. 🎯 Its not probably because of kürdi’s structure but the way its used was different and today it doesnt have much developed qualities for religious ceremonies. So since it was not used, there is almost no İlahi repertoire considering Kürdi. Same with songs except kürdilihicazkar. All in all considering scent, i.e. a Quran recitation in makam Kürdi would be sounding very awkward for us. The scent/color would be very unfitting and discomforting. There is some nice implementations as well, but its generally few seconds of a big piece or recording. I may make a topic later for it using videos.
